How Much Toilet Paper Does a Family Use? Weekly, Monthly and Yearly Numbers
The average person uses about 57 sheets a day. Here is what that means for your household, and how long the most popular packs actually last.

The average American uses about 57 sheets of toilet paper a day, or roughly 141 rolls a year, according to a 2020 report by Frontier Group. That number is the easiest way to plan how much to buy, because it works no matter which brand or roll size you choose.
Below, we turn it into real numbers for households of one to six people. You'll also see how long three popular packs last, so you can stop guessing when it's time to reorder.
Toilet paper use by household size
| People | Sheets per day | Sheets per week | Sheets per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 57 | 399 | 1,710 |
| 2 | 114 | 798 | 3,420 |
| 3 | 171 | 1,197 | 5,130 |
| 4 | 228 | 1,596 | 6,840 |
| 5 | 285 | 1,995 | 8,550 |
| 6 | 342 | 2,394 | 10,260 |
Months are counted as 30 days. Your real number will move up or down with a few things we cover further down, but this is a solid starting point.
How long does a pack last?
Roll counts are misleading because every brand puts a different number of sheets on a roll. Total sheets are what matter. Here's how long three common packs last at 57 sheets per person per day:
| People |
Charmin Ultra Soft, 18 Mega Rolls 4,032 sheets |
Angel Soft, 36 Mega Rolls 11,520 sheets |
Scott 1000, 20 Rolls 20,000 sheets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | About 10 weeks | About 6.5 months | About 11 months |
| 2 | About 5 weeks | About 14 weeks | About 6 months |
| 4 | About 2.5 weeks | About 7 weeks | About 3 months |
| 6 | About 12 days | About 5 weeks | About 8 weeks |
The gap is bigger than most people expect. A 1-ply roll like Scott 1000 holds four to five times as many sheets as a typical 2-ply Mega Roll, so twenty rolls can outlast a pack of thirty-six.
The simple formula
To work out any pack yourself:
Days a pack lasts = (rolls × sheets per roll) ÷ (people × 57)
For example, 24 rolls with 242 sheets each is 5,808 sheets. For a family of four, that's 5,808 ÷ 228, or about 25 days. We list sheets per roll in our product titles wherever the brand publishes it, so you can run this before you buy.
What makes your household use more
- Working or studying from home. More hours at home means more trips to your own bathroom instead of the office or school.
- Young children. Kids who are still learning tend to use a lot more paper per trip.
- Guests and holidays. A few days of visitors can use up a week's supply. Stock up before the holidays.
- Thinner sheets. With 1-ply paper, many people use a few more sheets per trip. Read more in our guide to 1-ply vs 2-ply vs 3-ply toilet paper.
- Using toilet paper for other jobs. Blowing noses or wiping spills with toilet paper adds up. Keeping facial tissue and paper towels within reach helps.

How much should you keep at home?
A practical rule is one month's supply plus a spare week. For a family of four, that's around 8,500 sheets, or roughly 35 Mega Rolls of 240 sheets. That covers a busy month with guests and gives you time to reorder before you run out.
If you have the space, larger packs usually cost less per sheet. Toilet paper keeps for years if it's stored somewhere dry, so buying in bulk has little downside beyond storage.
